Job Description
Reporting to the Director of Professional Practice, the Extern Coordinator is an integral member of the healthcare team and will support the development and execution of a comprehensive Clinical Extern Program which provides oversight to Clinical Externs who are clinical students (nursing, OT, PT, RT) working as unregulated care providers at Halton Healthcare.
The Extern Coordinator is responsible to support the implementation of the Clinical Extern Program across multiple units of Oakville, Milton and Georgetown hospitals, by supporting Clinical Externs in their practice and integration into care areas in accordance with college standards, policies and in collaboration with the clinical teams.
The Extern Coordinator guides and supports the Clinical Externs in providing high quality, safe care for patients and families, while demonstrating a commitment to excellence in supporting the patient and family experience.
The Extern Coordinator serves as a liaison and conduit between Clinical Externs and unit leadership, Professional Practice and Operations.
- Develop, execute and evaluate a comprehensive Clinical Extern Program
- Support recruitment, onboarding, orientation, and competency evaluation of Clinical Externs
- Create, adapt and deliver education / training and learning resources, using various delivery methods, including supporting teams to receive and work with Clinical Externs
- Support the integration of Clinical Externs at the organizational and unit level by collaborating closely with Professional Practice Clinicians, Patient Care Managers, Clinical Resource Nurses and Team Leads
- Have the ability to provide on-unit support for Clinical Extern professional development at all three hospital sites
- Participate in competency evaluation and performance management
- Participate in scheduling, data collection and reporting requirements
- Collaborate and partner with the student clinical placement program to ensure connection and clarity between externs and clinical students and position to optimize health human resources
Qualifications
- Regulated Healthcare Professional in good standing with their Professional College (of extern student groups including Nursing, OT, PT, RT)
- Three (3) years related health care experience
- Current certificate in Basic Life Support by the Heart and Stroke Foundation preferred
- Passion for and experience with mentorship, preceptorship and adult learning principles with previous experience as a preceptor or Clinical Instructor for students preferred
- Strong relationship building skills and ability to collaborate across various levels of leadership
- Exceptionally patient and caregiver focused and ability to communicate effectively with patients and families
- Demonstrated ability to : respond positively to change, work independently, organize and set priorities, problem solve, develop systems which create efficient workflows, meet timelines and lead continuous quality improvement initiatives
- Excellent verbal and written communication (using various and creative methods to maintain connection with workers at multiple sites)
- Excellent analytical and data management skills
- Highly proficient using Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, and PowerPoint
- Proven high level of maturity, discretion and seen as a role model
- Ability to maintain impartiality, objectivity, diplomacy and confidentiality, including an understanding and appreciation for cultural, religious and other individual beliefs
- Demonstrated evidence of commitment to continuous learning through pursuit of educational endeavours
- Vehicle with commitment to travel between Georgetown, Milton and Oakville hospital sites
